Methane number testing of alternative gaseous fuels
نویسندگان
چکیده
Alternative gaseous fuels, like syn-gas and bio-gas, are attractive fuels for internal combustion engines due to energy and environmental concerns. Although the worldwide use of alternative gaseous fuels has increased, the knock properties of these fuels are not well understood. The methane number (MN) knock rating technique was selected based on its range and sensitivity. Eight alternative gaseous fuel compositions were simulated with a gas blending system and tested for MN in a Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) F-2 engine. The alternative gaseous fuels ranged from 24 to 140 MN (natural gas typical range 75–95). 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Study of Volumetric Efficiency for Spark Ignition Engines Using Alternative Fuels
One of the most important parameter for spark ignition engines is volumetric efficiency, as it directly influences specific power output. Several definitions of this parameter are studied from a theoretical point of view, taking into consideration the use of alternative fuels. The influence of using gasoline-bioethanol blends is investigated, as well as the effect of fuelling spark ignition eng...
متن کاملCombustion and Emission of a Compression Ignition Engine Fueled with Diesel and Hydrogen-Methane Mixture
The present study conducted experimental investigation on combustion and emission characteristics of compression ignition engine using diesel as pilot fuel and methane, hydrogen and methane/hydrogen mixture as gaseous fuels at 1800 rev min. The effect of gaseous fuel on peak cylinder pressure and heat release is modest at low to medium loads. At high load, the high combustion temperature and hi...
متن کاملDirect injection of methane in advanced propulsion systems: effects of thermodynamic conditions
The direct injection of gaseous fuels involves the presence of under-expanded jets due to the high pressure-ratios and the strong gas compressibility. Understanding the physical development of such processes is essential for developing Direct Injection (DI) devices suitable for application in internal combustion engines fueled by methane or hydrogen. In this work a coupled experimental-numerica...
متن کاملNumerical study of the effect of fuel injection timing on the ignition delay, performance parameters and exhaust emission of gas/dual fuel diesel engine using Computational Fluid Dynamics
Today, due to the various usage of compression ignition engines in urban transportation, as well as the need to reduce exhaust emissions and control fuel consumption, the use of alternative fuels has become common in diesel engines. Gaseous fuel is one of the most common alternative fuels that can be used in diesel engines. The utilization of alternative fuels in compression ignition engines re...
